Weather and Stress
Sabriya Mutize, NCC, LCMHC
As the seasons change, so too can our mental and emotional states. For many, weather can be more than just a backdrop to daily life; it can significantly impact mood, energy levels, and overall stress. Rainy days, intense storms, or even prolonged heat waves may lead to heightened feelings of tension, anxiety, or sadness.
Why Does Weather Affect Our Stress?
Weather impacts our routines, comfort levels, and sense of security. Sudden changes—like storms, extreme temperatures, or hurricanes—can create feelings of vulnerability or uncertainty. For instance, people who’ve experienced extreme weather events may feel triggered by similar weather patterns, leading to heightened stress responses. Even less dramatic changes, such as shorter, colder days, can contribute to a drop in mood, known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Coping with Weather-Induced Stress
So, how can we manage the impact of weather on our mental health? Here are some strategies to help you stay grounded:
Stay Prepared: Being ready for expected weather changes can ease stress. This could mean keeping an emergency kit, planning indoor activities, or setting aside time for self-care on stormy days.
Create a Cozy Space: If the weather outside is making you feel stressed, create a comforting indoor environment. Adding warm lighting, soft blankets, or soothing scents can help make your space feel like a refuge.
Embrace Nature When Possible: For those sunny days, make an effort to go outside, even if just for a few minutes. Sunlight helps to boost mood and can reduce feelings of stress. On colder days, bundling up and taking a brisk walk can still provide a fresh perspective.
Reach Out for Support: Weather changes can sometimes bring up deeper anxieties or old fears. If this resonates with you, it’s okay to seek help. Talking with a counselor can offer strategies and support to help you feel more in control, no matter the weather.
